Motif

Suddenly, an understanding.
Motifs don't represent anything. They are just there. Like teeth in WHITE TEETH.

As such, they are neither symbolic or representational, but ornamental,
like the persisence of certain geometrical shapes in a mosque.

If so, why are they so effect in making a story seem more "story like?" And why are they an essential part of a narrative?
