I was wrong.
Chinatown in New York is massive. It's old. Lot's of history, vibrant, a
"functioning community," growning, and very Chinese.
Lot's of ethnic communities around the world are basically museum
pieces.
Chinatown in New York is the physical manifestation of the idealized
American Capitalism. They sell every type of goods, in different
quality, and price. Everybody is hawking something. They are bargining,
pushing, and price-rationalizing. There doesn't seem to be any rules
here. One can buy counterfeit everything.
Another thought, Chinatown here seem less integrated to the surronding
area. All around it are tony areas. Chinatown remained Chinatown. The
other thing, the people there seemed more isolated. It really is another
world.
