This place is busy with people. There are a lot of billboards. Many
actors, many Broadway shows.
Okay, with the obvious out of the way, I can talk about what I saw.
This guy is a ... I guess, security guard hire by the Times Square
Business Association to help the police keep order in Times Square.
They just watch to make sure everything is in order, call 911 in case of
an emergency, give directions and Broadway Show schedules, and pose for
picture for tourists.
They don't seem to do much, but their presence really enhances the
quality of the place. They make it FEEL safer in all the bustle. Also, I
see them promoting for the local shows and and giving the tourists
something to do. I have a feeling that these guys pay for themselves.
The second item of interest for me in Times Square is this New York
licence plate for disabled vets. I found out from the Times Square
officer above that all the hawkers must have disabled vet licences.
I walked up a few blocks and saw a few peddlers. I checked. Sure enough
most of them have the licence. I talked to the owner of this plate and
he was willing to share his views, for a dollar, of course.
The money wasn't for him. It for a raffle, setup for a scholarship fund
for childrens of vets. This guys is nice, for a New Yorker. He had a
smile as broad as sunshine. He told me about Vietnam and how freedom is
not free. The privlege to peddler is a small benefit for the high price
paid by those who came back, and those who didn't.
